Storm Central

While I’m not up against mountains on this stretch, I am up against weather (flooding on the Missouri and the Plattes, and tornadoes), construction and good ol’ boredom. I checked the Nebraska transit page to make sure I80 wasn’t closed anywhere due to flooding. Looked ok. An insane amount of construction, but no flooding. Checked out the weather. Looked decent. Shouldn’t have any issues. Maybe a little rain in Illinois, but that’d be it.

…..ZIP! Bye Colorado.

Gas: $3.53

SHUT UP!!!! 30.59MPG!!!!! I should go through the mountains more often…..

…..ZIP! Bye Wyoming.

…..And then there’s Nebraska.

Where we have farms.

And cows.

And windfarms.

And endless construction.

And truck stops on fire?

And idiot (but GORGEOUS) bikers from Montenegro. Ok, not exactly idiot, they were just driving like Europeans….which isn’t really a good idea in NEBRASKA.

Gas: $3.79

27.45MPG…..eh, not bad.

…..Thank you, Midwestern construction, for making me miss my Iowa sign.

The whole area between Omaha, NE, and Council Bluffs, IA, was completely shut down into haphazard single lanes, and I had the even better experience of going through it at “rush hour.”

But we’re finally in Iowa.

Where we have farms.

And cows.

And windfarms.

And endless construction.

And really weird gas layouts….isn’t regular supposed to be the cheapest? Why is the plus 20 cents cheaper than it?

Gas: $3.49

29.19MPG! Excellent! Nice work hyperfast jet stream!

Which of course means that there are tornados…..

Ugly to the East.

Creepy to the North.

Dark to the South.

Flip through the radio for weather updates: tornados about three counties north east of me. Where am I going? North east. Uh-huh. More coming in from the west. Uh-huh.

Proceed to hole up in a hotel in Williamsburg, IA. Thank you, that’ll be all for the night. Stupid weather forecast.
