The Capital of Europe

It’s one of those facts that you know, but don’t put all together with all the other facts that you know.

“Brussels is where the EU Headquarters are.”

“Brussels is ugly” or any variable version of that statement.

Then you get to Brussels and discover this massive oxymoron of a city in person. You see the most beautiful square in Europe and walk through rundown, graffitied allies getting to the massive Palais du Justice before taking a ride on the new? under renovations? complete crap? metro to the EU section of the city where you pop above ground at what rivals Ground Zero.

The buildings are stately in the true form of unique Brussels architecture, but the crosswalks and roads and sidewalks and straight up infrastructure appear it be missing. Maybe once they get that straightened out it’ll make more sense that the EU Headquarters stay exactly where they are. Or maybe that’s just yet another confusing detail of Brussels that only the locals get.
